Are Lucky Dog® Poop Bags compostable?

Yes, our bags comply with ASTM D6400 standards and are compostable. While dog waste is not safe for home composting, it can be safely composted in an industrial composting facility. Check with your local municipality to find out if there is an industrial composting facility near you that can accept dog waste to help reduce waste in landfills and contribute to producing beneficial compost. If an industrial composting facility is not available, we suggest tossing the bag in the garbage. Are Lucky Dog® Poop Bags really leak proof?

Absolutely! In fact, Lucky Dog® Poop Bags exceed performance standards. At 17 microns thick, Lucky Dog® Poop Bags are built so that you never have to experience breaks or leaks. Other bags proudly claim they are thicker by design, but thicker means more material and energy to manufacture. Lucky Dog® Poop Bags thickness is optimized for performance and balanced to minimize energy, water, and materials required to produce for the benefit of the environment. 

Do your Lucky Dog® Poop Bags include a plastic or cardboard core?

Lucky Dog® Poop Bags do not contain a wasteful and unnecessary center core. Some bags contain a recycled core, but Lucky Dog® Poop Bags are built to maximize the resources utilized in manufacturing and production of materials, because we care about the environment.

What is the primary vegetable used in Lucky Dog® poop bags?

Lucky Dog® Poop Bags are made from a resin derived from renewable raw materials, mainly non-GMO corn starch and natural plasticizers directly derived from starch (i.e. sorbitol and glycerol) along with compostable and biodegradable polyesters (PBAT). The bag composition also includes benign/inert minerals that come from color pigments, chalk or talc used to control stickiness of films and to help make the bags easy to open.

Because Lucky Dog® Poop Bags are made from a vegetable based resin, there’s none of the traditional plastic static cling.

Do Lucky Dog® Poop Bags expire?

Lucky Dog® Poop Bags have a 12 to 18 month shelf life depending on the humidity of your region. Because they aren’t composed of the same materials as traditional plastic bags, Lucky Dog® Poop Bags will eventually naturally degrade and not perform as originally designed. Store Lucky Dog® Poop Bags in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Warm, humid environments or direct moisture can reduce their shelf life.

What happens if I leave my Lucky Dog® Poop Bags on the sidewalk with pet waste in it?

First, you will be disliked by the next person who walks by and sees that full bag of dog poop along the sidewalk. Bacteria and microorganisms will naturally biodegrade Lucky Dog® Poop Bags over a relatively short period of time with the help of air, moisture, and sunlight. Lucky Dog® Poop Bags will essentially disappear and leave no harmful materials behind, however the pet waste would be exposed and find its way into the ground water system. Please be responsible and dispose of your Lucky Dog® Poop Bag properly.

Will Lucky Dog® Poop Bags compost in a landfill?

Landfills are not designed to promote biodegradation or produce compost material. The Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA), requires landfills to block out air, moisture and sunlight; crucial elements for biodegradation. Landfills are engineered to prevent biodegradation and any interaction of landfill waste with the surrounding environment. As a result, organic materials and compostable bags like Lucky Dog® Poop Bags are not likely to biodegrade in a landfill. Even the most modern sanitary landfills carry the risk of microplastics leaking into the environment and contaminating groundwater. Lucky Dog® Poop Bags comply with the ASTM D6400 standards and when completely biodegraded, leaving no harmful materials behind.

What is an aerobic vs. anaerobic environment?

An aerobic environment is characterized by the presence of free oxygen (O2) while an anaerobic environment lacks free oxygen but may contain atomic oxygen bound in compounds such as nitrate (NO3), nitrite (NO2), and sulfites (SO3).

What is ASTM?

ASTM used to stand for American Society for Testing and Materials. It evolved into ASTM International.

From the ASTM website:

What does ASTM D6400 actually mean?

ASTM D6400 is a rating standard, administered by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), which certifies that products are compostable in an aerobic environment in municipal and industrial composting facilities. In order to comply with the standard, material must:

Disintegrate to the extent that it cannot be “readily distinguished from the finished product.”

Biodegrade at a rate comparable to compostable materials.

Cannot negatively affect the ability of compost to support plant growth.

That standard was to develop a consistent, simple way to identify compostability.

Who is BPI?

Biodegradable Products Institute, BPI® is an association that was established to provide testing, education and promotion of compostable products. BPI® ensures that any product that carries its logo meet the ASTM D6400 standard and specifications required to be compostable. As of August 2019, BPI will only license pet waste bags in Canada, where pet waste is commonly accepted in curbside composting programs. This category of products is not permitted to display the BPI logo after August 2020. For approved products distributed in Canada, the BPI logo must include “For use in Canada only”.  Exception to the “BPI Pet Waste Policy – Canada Only” is available for approval where acceptable composting programs include: private company collection sites for pet waste, receptacles in public spaces by private or public programs, and/or curbside household collection programs.

What does the Compostable EN 13432 certification mean?

There are various standards to validate industrial compostability of products like Lucky Dog® Poop Bags around the world. EN 13432 is the European standard which requires the compostable plastic to disintegrate after 12 weeks and completely biodegrade after six months. That means that 90 percent or more of the plastic material will have been converted to CO2. The remaining share is converted into water and biomass – i.e. valuable compost. Materials and products complying with this standard can be labelled accordingly as certified.

What does the Compostable ABAP 10153 certification mean?

This refers to the industrial compostability standards recognized throughout Australia and New Zealand. The Australian Bioplastic Association (ABA) enlists an independent third party testing laboratory to verify compliance with Australian Standard 4736-2206, compostable and biodegradable plastics.
